Banh Mi Cafe

What is a banh mi? Banh mi refers to bread and in this case, baguette. And so simply put, this cafe is a Vietnamese baguette cafe serving well, er, traditional Vietnamese baguette in a variety of choices.

I am unsure if it is because I have had different kinds of banh mi when in Sydney that made me feel a tiny bit disappointed when I saw the banh mi here. The banh mi in Sydney were all stuffed to the brim, like extremely packed to the verge of bursting. Here, it was not so. But I have only visited once, so my observation would be a little unjust.

You cannot visit a Vietnamese place without having Vietnamese Drip Coffee. Here, it is served the traditional way. Not bad in taste, too.

I tried a Da Me Asam Boi or Tamarind Drink, which I thought looked interesting. I would not say that I entirely liked it, though. It took some getting used to.

Tan Viet Noodle House

There is no other place to go to for Crispy Skin Chicken with Tomato Rice.

Enough said because nothing I say will do justice to the crispiness of the chicken and the satisfied "ah, so full" feeling when the plate is bulldozed to nothingness. Go try it yourself. You know you want to.

Pottery Green Bakers, Gordon

Each time I walk up the pavement from Gordon Station, I try to catch a glimpse of the pastry display at Potter Green Bakers. All I do is glimpse and imagine myself indulging in all its glorious sweetness until one fine morning, I managed to organise a catch up here with a fellow Malaysian food-lover.

The first thought that came to mind when I stepped into the cafe was: Wow, Mum and Dad would love this place! The use of timber and steel was evident throughout the cafe, which helped create a rustic industrial ambience.

The use of plants and used bottles not only help to soften the tone of the place, it also adds colour and character.

You won't get drunk on this!
I should have asked if the metal of their tableware was copper but I did not. However, I did find out that their parents run the Lane Cove branch and are originally from Vietnam. Their Dad is especially good with his hands - he personally stamped, shaped and buffed these little babies in their family workshop back in Vietnam.

My cuppa of chai latte (hot drinks from $3.50 onwards)
Both of us weren't very hungry yet so we ordered off the breakfast menu. K had a grilled halloumi and poached egg stack ($15), a healthy mountain of crunchy spinach leaves, juicy grilled tomato, salty and chewy grilled halloumi cheese, poached eggs with oozy runny egg yolks stacked atop a slice of sourdough toast with a peak of fresh sprouts. A little messy to have but anything with poached eggs would be delicious.

And to continue with the egg theme, I ordered one of my favourite things - French toast.

Looked small but it was very filling. Their version of French toast is with cinnamon, bananas and Canadian maple syrup. The had their bananas and maple syrup on the side, unlike many other places who have their bananas and maple syrup on top of the toast. This way, we, the people eating it, get to choose how many pieces of banana and how much syrup to pour over.

Ah, and of course, can't leave without trying some of the pastry on display, can we? We had an Opera Slice ($5.00), which we found a little dry. Very chocolatey but a little dry. Maybe it was just that one piece which was like that. Unlucky us.

The Citron Tart ($4.50), however, was delightful. The pastry was just right for us and oh my, that tangy citron punch - like!

Another thing to like - this quote by Oscar Wilde that hung above where I was sitting:

Night Noodle Markets @ Hyde Park, Sydney

With the Sydney Tower watching over a canopy of colourful paper lanterns that welcome visitors to the Night Noodle Markets, the crowd was beginning to swell.

I was fortunate, as the queue was still short at Jackie M's stall. I quickly joined the queue, placed my order and patiently waited for my number to be called.

My plate of Fried Radish Cake ($15), although a tad pricey, was a plateful of authentic Malaysian street food awesomeness. Good wok hei, big portion, fresh bean sprouts, generous serving of radish and yes, good dollop of sambal.

And that was the only thing I had that night, other than a cup of hot chocolate courtesy of C. However, I did take my time to walk the entire market to see who else had set up stall - my first time at this event, after all. Previously, I only go for The Good Food Month's Let's Do Brunch (now Let's Do Lunch).

So, let's start with the stall next to Jackie M (her stall was the first one) and just follow the loop of all the stalls at Hyde Park. There were Kinn Dining and New Shanghai...

Rolls Vietnam and Ippudo Sydney...

Dim Sum Station and Chat Thai...

There was a section of the park that had the violet canopy of jacaranda blooms. The cool weather provided much relief from the heat in the past week.

The Coffee Tram...

Coopers... ah, booze, perfect to usher in the weekend...

Okay, continuing with the loop... Bar Pho and Mamak...

Fei Jai...

Interesting, the first ramen burger to be sold in Sydney apparently...

The smell of cinnamon at Mini Pancakes was so tempting as I walked past. Too bad I only had my camera with me, no cash.

Junior Thai...

Spanthai...

St. Honore Cake Shop...

... with colourful mochi balls...

Rekordelig...

Thai Thai Express...

Ever Green Noodles...

Bombay Central...

Poklol... sorry but I had to laugh with I read it aloud - sounds like one of my 3-year-olds or a super Cina person trying to say pork roll...

Zilver Restaurant...

Lets Do Yum Cha...

... and their very friendly angmoh staff... :)

Mizuya...

Serendipity Natural Ice Cream...

Viet Yum...

I found it interesting that the first and last stalls were Malaysian stalls. Hm...

And with friends, family, good food (and a comfy spot to sit on), what's there to complain about? This is the last week for your chance to join in the fun, so make your plans now, people!
