PULP by Papa Palheta

We were a little confused as to which road to turn into from the main road of Jalan Maarof in Bangsar - Waze said one thing while Maps said another. Anyways, we made it there and if your GPS tools fail to make it easier for you to find your way there, searching for New Straits Times Press may help a little. I said may, not will. And so, we were ecstatic when we finally found them.

With only street parking available, it would be less frustrating to come during non-office hours, as with the work crowd around, you would be considered really lucky if you managed to find a spot just outside. Silly me, I have not figured out if we were allowed to park inside, actually, but we did, anyway. At night mah, and the security guard not there also... hehe...

I have a thing for places that are recycled, as in places that support sustainability. Instead of letting leaving empty what used to be a paper-cutting facility of a printing works factory and storehouse, it had been turned into PULP by Singaporean coffee specialist, Papa Palheta.

There were some old paper machinery around, which cleverly blended into the furniture. It was obvious that they were serious about their coffee here, as they roast and purvey their own brand of coffee to coffee lovers in Malaysia and Singapore. 

In fact, they are so serious that they care to educate the public on how to understand and appreciate the coffee that is being consumed. They organise workshops and drive a C-Platform, a forum whereby coffee professionals and enthusiasts alike get to hone their coffee-making skills. 

In addition to selling coffee-related accessories, maintenance tools and equipment, they are also the distributor of the American Synesso, Italian Rocket Espresso and Irish Marco machines in Malaysia and Singapore.

The interior of PULP conveyed the simple message of "come and enjoy a cuppa". Nothing fancy and no wifi, they really made sure that everyone paid attention to their coffee.

Well, there were some nibbles, though. And when nibbles included cake, Cath and I would find hard to resist.

We had a cheesecake. Oh so fluffy little thing, it was. Why can't they make it slightly bigger? I can hear them retort with a why can't I order another one...

And there was no way on Earth that we were leaving the place without trying their coffee... smooth and just right for my liking.

Antipodean Cafe @ Bangsar

"We go to Antipodean, want?" What, you have to ask me that? Of course I want! And so bestie, his wife and I met there for brunch.

Famous for their Australian-style brekkie and coffee, I opted for a lighter meal of French Toast with Berry Compote (RM14.00/AUD4.80) instead of a heavy big breakfast. I should have asked for the toast to be wholemeal instead of white bread. Berry compote was delectable, I finished it all.

All cakes here are sold at RM8.00/AUD2.75 a serve. We shared a slice of Lemon Meringue Pie, which in my opinion was too egg-y (maybe too much egg white?) but was tangy in just the right way. Enjoyed it, nevertheless.

Lovely ambience with friendly service. Outdoor seating available for smokers. And best of all, it reminded me of my cafe-hopping times in Sydney. One day, I will pay a visit to their branch in Sydney :)

Alexis

It took me a while before I had a chance to visit Alexis Bangsar. Friends have been talking about the place for years and instead of visiting with friends, I visited with Dad.

As it was just before lunch time, the place was still quiet. We were shown to our table very quickly.

We sat right at the front overlooking their outdoor dining area.

I liked the interior of the place - they used quite a bit of wood.

The place was brightly lit at that time but I wondered if it would be as brightly lit during dinner time.

Dad ordered a Chicken and Mushroom Pie (RM26.00/AUD8.90), which he found just average. He reckoned that it was a tad expensive, though.

Please smack me for I did not take down what I had (again, sorry). It was a little too heavy for lunch, as I realised that I had to force myself to stay awake as I was driving home. The penne could have been left to boil for slightly longer though.

Was not very impressed despite how friends rave about the place, in all honesty.

As they had a bigger outlet at The Gardens, I asked VK if we could dine there before our movie. I decided to give their pasta another try and chose to have a pumpkin and ricotta ravioli (I love ravioli). I was disappointed yet again, as the eight pieces of ravioli that got served were not worth the price VK paid.

The only consolation was the Tiramisu (RM15.00). Starting with a top layer of caramelised nuts followed by layers of finger sponge soaked in rum and rich mascarpone embedded with chocolate shavings, the huge piece of cake could make a meal on its own. Although the home-made raspberry sauce was a unique addition, I did not think that it added to the taste of the cake - it was fine on its own.

Country Farm Organics, Bangsar Shopping Village

Unlike past years, we decided to do our shopping for the staff Loyalty Award in Bangsar. Out of the three of us, Dad was the most familiar with the place, so we just followed his lead. He chose to park at Bangsar Village and then just randomly walked around in search of food.

Mum was glad to find an organic shop that not only sold food items but also had a bar and restaurant attached.

We enjoyed the ambience, the service and the food served. Shame not all their outlets allow in-house dining.

Haha, yes, I was as amazed as you are to find out that this was organic, too!
