Dough! Bakery & Cafe

Happy Mansion is a familiar name to cafe-hoppers. Sometimes, I wonder if it is because of the cafes that bring happiness to the place or it is because the place is a happy place that attracted the cafes there.

From when the first cafe opened there, Happy Mansion progressively had more cafes popped up. One of them is Dough! Bakery and Cafe, which is known for its croissants and sourdough bread.

I visited on a Sunday with my usual makan kakis. We ordered a croissant and a waffle to share. The chocolate croissant that we tried lived up to its crispy and flaky name. Dark chocolate was in every bite, which left us feeling satisfied. We also appreciated the plate that it was served on.

Although the chocolate waffle looked really rich, it was not overwhelmingly so. We enjoyed it to its last drip of chocolate.

Despite it being late arvo, we still had a good amount of natural lighting. They had a few potted plants around, too, which added to its cosiness.

With the fragrance of good coffee and freshly-baked pastry, we quickly made plans to visit together again to try their main meals.

It gets really crowded on the weekends. We drove round the block four times before we found a parking spot. Be prepared. Also, as there are still people living in the low-cost flats above these trendy cafes, be respectful and not park in places where you ought not to.

Bakeology Cafe

Although it is quite a far trek for me to get to Taman SEA from home, I try to visit. Not that I am biased but because I know them personally, I know their history of making good quality hearty food at home. If the food they make at home is good, how can the food they sell not be?

I have known this family from young, say for about 20 odd, almost 30 years I have known them. When I heard that they opened a cafe, I made it a point to find out where they were and paid them a visit. They were not hard to locate and it helped with yellow and black as their signature colours.

While Caryn (the youngest and who is so grown-up and pretty now), more or less takes charge of the front, Cheryl is in charge of the back, where the main action is. Not too bad for a new place, their mocha.

Cheryl dabbled in a few things before settling down to start a family and completed a pastry course. During my younger years, Dad would share stories from the office relating to how she was helping Aunty Millie in the kitchen and how Uncle Bernard would complain about buying expensive ingredients. Complaints aside, we could tell that he was proud. And which explains why they also offer freshly-baked pastries and cakes - Cheryl has been practicing her craft from young.

I have visited them twice and so have not tried too many things on their menu. One thing I had to was the French toast because, well, I am a sucker for French toast. Do not be deceived by this little loaf of French toast. It is packed full of flavour. Some may enjoy it, some may not, depending on whether you like or dislike egg, banana, or caramel sauce.

I devoured my slice of Blueberry Zuchie in almost its entirety before I remembered to take a photo of it. Sorry, I ended with a very unflattering photo of my slice of Blueberry Zuchie. Ah, yes, it was good, the combination of blueberry and zucchini. Refreshing and healthly. Just its name sounds healthly already. I mean, how can blueberry and zucchini not sound healthy? However, my friend and I did think that it was a tad too hard in texture and suggested to adjust the temperature of their cake chiller. But that was just us, perhaps other customers like that texture.

They now also do fresh-pressed juices and are occasionally closed to run their stalls at markets. Like them on Facebook and follow their Instagram to keep yourselves updated. I wonder what new cakes would be available when I return to KL next. Hm... ;)

I'm Not A Chef Cafe

I hardly venture to this area of PJ deterred by the traffic. It is not exactly near to where I live but because my friend and I had a special event to attend in that area, we checked out the cafe scene there. There were so many to choose from. In the end, we decided on I'm Not A Chef Cafe, attracted by its name.

Located on the first floor, they were not easy to find. More noticeable signage would help.

We were welcomed by a naked brick counter with lots of things. There was a mini fridge with cakes, a coffee machine and other things.

The cafe is operated by two friends. One looked after the floor and drinks while the other looked after the kitchen and hot meals.

Forgive me but I do not recall if both or one of them were in New Zealand and incorporated some of the Kiwiness into the cafe.

As they are situated a stone's throw away from tertiary institutions, I would imagine that they would get quite a few students frequenting them. That would explain the "art bench top" they have available for customers to doodle and leave their creativity behind.

Soft shades and cosy furniture also available in addition to the usual dining tables and foldable chairs.

I liked how they try to have some real plants. I feel that plants make a huge difference to spaces.

Okay, now to the grub. Let's start with drinks. I had my standard mocha, which they call mochacino  (RM8.50) here. Had a lot of foam. Perhaps I should have asked for less.

Evon had a glass of cold lemon honey cucumber juice (RM5.90). Very refreshing.

We shared all the food we ordered. When we saw the freshly-made Hawaiian pizza (RM17.90), we could not contain our excitement. It had been ages since we had good pizza!

We thought Chiaki's Chicken Chop with Apple Sauce served with Grilled Potato (RM20.90) was unique. Could have done with less potato and with a bigger piece of chicken, though.

We really enjoyed the Apple Crumble served with Vanilla Ice-Cream (RM12.90), especially the ice-cream. We could not get enough of it!

One special feature I found quite interesting was their use of nasi lemak wrapping paper as menus...

... and their own drawing of the different types of coffee on their stools that taught customers the different percentages of water:milk:coffee. You would have to walk around to every stool to see all of them, though.

D'Cuisine

When I received an e-mail from a 'D'Cuisine', I went, "Who? What?" and found out that they are a restaurant with an Peranakan, Chinese and Western fusion menu. Golly, this fusion food business is no joke, hey?

I questioned my memory of my two visits to Plaza33, both which were to Noble Mansion for bestie's wedding dinner. Little did I realise that D'Cuisine is tucked in the space underneath the escalators leading up to Noble. Talk about clever use of space!

They are a part of the D'Group establishment of restaurants, which also includes D'Italiane and Ketchup. They started from a humble Italian restaurant in Section 9 of Shah Alam and from there, they expanded to Jaya33 in 2007, Sunway Giza in 2009, Paradigm Mall in 2012 and one year later, here in Plaza33.

They aim to bring to diners variations of modern fusion fare that blends Eastern and Western flavours, something that was evident in their extensive menu. According to Wikipedia, fusion cuisine is cuisine that combines elements of different culinary traditions and have played a part in contemporary restaurant cuisines since the 70s. Malaysian food, I would think, is naturally considered fusion due to the multicultural demographics of our country.

From where we were seated, we had a clear view of the bar, which made ordering drinks pretty easy. We noticed that they recycle their coasters and corks into table numbers - creative and cost-saving.

Cocktails and mocktails come at the standard price of RM28.00 and RM15.00 respectively. As it was in the middle of the day and neither of us wanted to risk driving under the influence of alcohol (for me it was more of a case of avoiding falling asleep), we both ordered mocktails. I tried For Gordon's Sake, a concoction of Gordon's Gin, sake, elderflower syrup, grape juice, mint leaves and white wine. And I so beat myself up afterwards because I so should have ordered the cocktail version - without the alcohol, it tasted like juice. Alicia tried Stubborn & Peachy (what a name), a concoction of Don Julio Reposed Tequila, peach liquer, peach puree, ginger syrup, lemongrass stick and cinnamon stick. And she really liked the unique although a little peculiar taste! I thought her drink was more special, too, perhaps due to the combination of more herb-like ingredients.

We left the ordering to their recommendations. For starters, we were served the caramelised orange calamari (RM19.00), fresh squid battered and deep fried till golden crisp coated with fresh orange infused caramel. Beautifully presented complete with an orange, the squid was definitely golden crisp. We thought that it would have tasted better if we could taste more of the orange instead of the caramel. Also, we could hardly chew the smaller pieces of squid - more batter than squid. However, that said, it was rather addictive - kept popping into our mouths pieces of squid until the next dish was served.

The D'Cuisine Peranakan special (RM26.00) was a large serving of their signature platter combination of deep fried whole chicken leg served with prawn sambal and coconut rice. Very similar to the everyday nasi lemak but minus the spice.

We thought the salad was good enough to be served as is and that the presentation of the dish was inviting. We gave chicken leg four thumbs up - crispy on the outside, tender, flavoursome and juicy on the inside.

We were also served the yam and seafood hotpot set (RM32.80), fresh yam stone-ground and infused into a seafood stock with fresh seafood. We were too full to finish the entire set but did enjoy the combination of yam and seafood. Alicia liked the adorable green pot it was served in, too. As it was the first we have tried this combo, we asked which Chinese dialect this dish belonged to. The informed guess would be Hakka, as we Hakka like using yam in our cooking.

We both felt that the Chinese herbal soup gave it an additional home-like feel, as it is a commonly found dish of many home-cooked Chinese meals. We also liked how there were three sides that accompanied the main and understood that these sides were part of the set. However, without the sides, we felt that both bowls of soup with rice would have sufficed because the portion was super generous!

As we have tried a starter, a rice dish, and a set, they included a noodle dish to our list of must-tries. Alicia was ecstatic when they chose to serve us their grouper fish noodles (RM22.00), their signature noodle dish with deep fried premium group pieces in classic fish noodle soup with preserved vegetables, tomatoes and spring onions with a hint of milk. My mum would have loved this. Again, this was a huge bowl - if I came alone, I would not have been able to finish this. Alicia liked it, too. I normally take my fish noodles with vermicelli, no milk and non-fried fish pieces, which should I request, they would comply.

To complete our tasting session, we were served their chef recommended dessert of baked banana filo with butter caramel and vanilla ice-cream (RM16.00). Basically, it is a dish of fresh bananas wrapped in filo pastry baked and topped with screwpine infused butter caramel sauce, served with premium homemade vanilla ice-cream.

Alicia wondered if they were trying too hard to include too much 'fusion' into their menu - sometimes less is better. However, we both agreed that it makes a great place to chill, especially for after work drinks and for a cosy gathering with friends and family - service is friendly and quick and the ambience is inviting and clean, as well as no crazy loud go-through-your-body kind of music and no hold-your-breath-because-the-person-next-to-you-is-smoking.

Plenty of parking upstairs payable at either the pay station or by Touch n' Go. Do note that if you come on a weekday, you would have to go up to almost Level 7 or 8 before you would get a spot because the office workers have reserved car spots, which means limited parking for visitors. If you do not drive, it is reachable by bus, as there are bus stops on both sides of the road and I am pretty sure these buses connect to nearby LRT stations. If the bus stops on the opposite side of the road from Plaza33, fret not, there is an overhead pedestrian bridge that leads you directly to the door step of Jaya33 next door.

A big thank you to the people who made this complimentary tasting session possible. They were especially accommodating, as we were bouncing e-mails back and forth to postpone this session several times.

Kedai Makanan O & S Restaurant Paramount Garden

The last time I drove past this hawker centre would be when I was still dating J. Gasp, that was ages ago! Geez...

I revisited because being the good daughter I am (ahem), I accompanied Dad to the car service centre near Jalan 222 and this place was a 5-minute drive away. And we were hungry.

"You want to have char kway teow at O & S?" I furiously nodddddddd......

To consume char kway teow in all its pork lard, charcoal wok hei and high-cholesterol cockle glory, one has to be eating this at a noisy, crowded, hot and somewhat smelly hawker centre in the midst of plastic tables and chairs. Did I just spoil the image for everyone? :D

Char kway teow RM4.50
One dish that I have not had in years is curry noodles. I remember that I use to have a bowl almost every day back in primary school. Squeeze the kalamansi lime to add some sour taste. Otherwise, the bowl of noodles with beancurd puff, bean sprouts and chicken in simple curry taste just as good with some sambal on the side.

Curry noodles with chicken RM4.50
Depending on the time of the day It is hard to find parking and a seat most times of the day, especially lunch time. But when you do, quickly place your order, tell them where you are seated and the food will come to you. Lots of waitstaff around so no worries with drink orders. Oh, and a pack of tissues is a must. :)
