Determining life fixtures

Living with friends is teaching me a thing or two about myself. Or rather, it is reminding me of my pros and cons, which to me, is the upside of living with other people.

I have heard from many that I should try living on my own for a change. Being truly independent of social contacts, to me, does not equate to being an independent person. I feel sorry for whoever out there who feels that it is. I have also heard from many that living with other people is difficult. But my dear, what isn't?

People in life come and go. No one is the exception. Everyone of us come and go in everybody else's lives. Even when we feel that some of the people in our lives are 'difficult', why are we determined to be bothered by them? They come... and they go.

But when they come into our lives, I feel that they are there for a reason. They appear for a reason, good or bad. So while they are there, why not make the best out of it?

Be determined, take the effort to break your own shell. Get to know them. Yes, you may not totally agree with the way they think, the things they say, the things they do or even the way they look but who's to say that you have to? Even by just observing them or listening to other friends gossip about them, you learn a thing or two about them and people in general.

Be determined, try to not generalise your own judgemental thoughts. Why? Because it gets you no where and is an isolating act of stubbornness. Like a mirror, your actions would elicit similar actions from those around you. Would you want others to be judgemental of your thinking?

Why destroy your own 'self' when the people around you are not permanently there?

Your parents,
siblings,
friends,
children,
life partners.

Will they all be there for you permanently? Who are you to decide that they will?

We have to decide for ourselves what lessons are to be learnt from every person we meet in our lives. For good or for bad, they are still lessons, if we heed their guidance.

Like when we think we hate our piano teachers because they were really harsh when training us for exams.
Like when we think we hate our best friends because they double-crossed and went after the guys you liked.
Like when we think we hate our older siblings because they get all the high grades.
Like when we think we hate our colleagues because they can afford expensive brands.

Look harder. They are all lessons from which we are able to learn. Look beyond the surface and think, do they all still matter to you now? No. Why?

Because they are all come-and-go incidences. They should not be in your mind forever. What should remain are the teachings behind those incidences. Yes, those can become the fixtures in your mind.

So every time someone pisses you off, boil. Boil to your heart's content for that minute or so. Then, cool down and think of what the reason this passer-by is passing you by.

You are a Scorpio?

She was surprised when I told her my birthday is in November.

"You mean, you're a Scorpio?"

Hm, yea, anything wrong with that? My first impression was that she had this bad spell with Scorpios that she despised them. Either that or, she has lovely Scorpio friends whom she loved to bits. I lifted an eyebrow to provoke her for more elaboration.

"How can that be? That's not possible! Not one bit are you like a Scorpio!"

Er, what am I supposed to be like then? But I am, Scorpio, you know. Very much one, in fact.

"No, no. You do not strike people as a Scorpio, really. You know how Scorpios are erm, 'poisonous'?"

Yes, yes. I do know that. I can be so if I want to but what good does that do? Just so you feel that what a friend said about yourself does not sound nice, you want to engage in a verbal war with her/him? Seriously, not worth my effort and time.

"You see! Normally, Scorpios do not think like that! They would just bam, say something that would get back at that person. It is supposed to be an in-built nature of Scorpios! How can you be a Scorpio when you think about making peace all the time?"

So does that mean both my mum and my brother aren't very good Scorpios, too? Haha, they love making peace with others. In fact, we try our best not to bother others as much as possible. Sometimes, it goes up to the point whereby we trouble ourselves a hell lot more just to get something done or to settle a misunderstanding.

"You are supposed to remember what others have done to you so that you can return the 'favour' with two times the sting."

........ ok? Then I would be remembered as the bad person! Why would I want to do that to myself? Yes, I remember things that people have done unto me. I always do. Heck, I still remember birthdays and some phone numbers of friends from primary school. If you cross my line, I will most definitely remember how you have done so and when. Even more so if you are a close friend because it would hurt more. But that doesn't mean that I use that memory to hurt them back! Why, we would be playing beat around the bush like that! It's tiring!

"You see! Someone like you, who runs up and down collecting signatures and collating documents for other people at no cost cannot be a Scorpio!"

But I am one.

Another week

Time flies when you least want it to, doesn't it? I totally hate it when you know very well that you have stuff to do, you plan and try hard to heed that plan that ends up being messed up. Why plan if that's the case? Makes planning a total waste of time.

Another week. Sigh. Another week of my life has gone. Just like that. And what do I have to show for it?

Well, for starters, I still have a middle finger that makes people think that I am a lunatic - I mean, Stef, really, I would not want to only colour one finger and why that particular finger if I had to? At least I can put that finger straight now and if I accidentally touch it, it doesn't hurt as much. But, the sting is still there. Definitely. Also, I have no idea why the hill of a bruise is still there. It's like you can still feel the 'hill' when you run your finger over my finger. Eeyer, geli...

The inspection for a place that happened last week didn't work out to be too smooth. Although the place we looked at was in a good neighbourhood, two of the three rooms were extremely small. Good part about it was Housemate 3 came along so I had an extra pair of eyes and another brain to help decide whether to apply for the place or not. This week's inspection was much better. Saw a total of four places, three of which we will apply for. So, fingers crossed la although I think it is still harder for us as others there were already prepared with documents and holding deposit cash. Us? Sigh, it always is only me alone who goes so how would I be able to apply for three of us? Okay, documents I can provide for them but their signatures?

Played baddy on Sunday at a sports hall that was not originally a sports hall. The lights were super distracting - I could hardly see the shuttle! But since it had been such a long time since I lifted a racquet, it was a good workout despite it being for a short time only. The next morning my whole body ached.... aaaahhhh, oklar, not so kua cheong, the whole of my right side ached. That is what you call unfitness.

Met up with a few friends for lunch and dinner throughout the week. One was at Milliore, where I watched everyone else eat. Haha... the other was at Kura to have a 'last meal' with Sheau Kang. She's headed for the Lion City, where she managed to secure a post in SGH. Congrats! Jenny and I also had the chance to hangout at Lynn and Diane's office. Haha, see how naughty we can get when our bosses are not around....

Let's see what the next week would bring. I hope I get more work done and more importantly, manage to find a place to move out to!

March matters

How did I log into the month of March? By stamping it onto my finger.....

Was at Jenny's for dinner with friends. When Michael headed to throw the trash out, he asked me to open the door for him. As the door was about to slam shut, I tried to hurry to it to hold it open but, unfortunately for me, I did not run fast enough and had my middle finger clamped by the super heavy duty door.

At first, I thought, hm, it would not hurt bad. Little did I know that after a few seconds, the pain kicked in in full capacity.

OMFG, I was in throbbing pain in a matter of seconds. Before I realised it, I was ushered to the sink to have my finger placed in running cold tap water. I protested but as I was held tightly by Michael, I had to place it there despite the bleeping pain. I even have a blood clot and a bruised hill of a finger to show:

Joy and Van prepared ice water for me to soak my finger in, which I really did not enjoy, either. In between my sobs, I went, "Michael, very pain...." Michael was really patient with me, coaxing me throughout the whole ordeal, trying to calm me down. Audrey, being a very calm and level-headed person, reminded me to breath normally and to stop hyperventilating.

Come to think of it, I think it was Michael's first time seeing my cry like that. I am dead serious - it really did effing hurt.

And again

Some of you may remember how I broke my record of never being admitted into hospital. Well, I wasn't admitted this time but it happened to me again. The vertigo, I mean.

Similar to the last time it happened, I was asleep. I was woken up by a strange feeling and when I opened my eyes, my vision was jumping, something like how your computer screen doesn't want to work properly. I turned. Same thing. Feeling nauseous, I headed for the toilet to vomit.

Okay, I needed my phone. Called Miow. I think I drained his battery because after the first call, the phone was off. Okay, Edi. No answer. Auds. No answer also. I mean, who would answer at this hour? It's freaking 4:30 in the morning!

Alright, don't panic. Took the meds that Dr. How gave me the last time. Hm... let's see if I could lie back down again, or maybe lean against the wall to see if I'll be able to doze off into slumberland again. Bad choice - I was spinning around again.

Called Edi again...... no answer. Auds, no answer. Again, Edi then Auds, who finally picked it up. She tried calling Michael, who switched his phone off. I called Nic and thank God he answered on the first try.

Honestly, Nic, thank you for bringing me to RPAH and for spending the 3 hours waiting there.

Now, I have an extra box of drugs to pop into my system.......

Trust

It goes very well with that sign we see in many tourist and gift shops - once broken, considered sold.

With some people, it develops with time. However, with some people, it comes naturally.

I feel that it is natural for people to trust other people. We are, human, after all. And we are a collectivistic society. Mostly. So, we trust easily or would want to trust others without being judgemental. And when we trust, we do so whole-heartedly. Ideally, that trust is reciprocated and thus, a genuine relationship is born.

But when do we not trust? When trust is broken, everything starts afresh. It is like filling up a jug with water and then breaking the jug. You would need to get a new jug and fill it up again.

I guess whether to trust or not to trust varies greatly for every individual. When I choose to trust, you may not. And a person you choose to trust, I may not. Our reasons, will vary as well.

Trust is at the very fundamentals of all relationships, both on the personal and business levels. The trust will help instigate other values like appreciation and more importantly, respect. And, they all work hand-in-hand with each other. It is a symbiotic relationship between trust, appreciation and respect.

When a balance is struck, especially between two people, there is harmony and acceptance.

So now, I have to ask myself: Can I respect what we have and appreciate the things that have happened? Can I accept it all? Do I want to trust?

The waiting game

Having realised that my friend was waiting for me to go for lunch, I quickly ended the conversation on MSN. I was feeling hungry, too, anyway.

It was an interesting lunch cum afternoon walk date. What was supposed to be an innocent lunch date became a short discovery walk through parts of Sydney. The walk brought us two babes from Darling Harbour, to Harbourside, to Star City, to the Fish Market and back to Darling Harbour and Market City. From there, it was onwards to World Square, then to UTS, and to Central and back to World Square. Yes, all on foot.

By the time I got home, my feet were sore, thanks to shoes not made for such walking.

The walk with my friend brought up many stories. Stories of us both. Although we stem from different backgrounds, there are similarities between the two and one similarity that stood out was the issue of time.

Time. Time is a commodity most people on Earth have a hard time grasping. She thinks that people unknowingly wait for time to pass.

Why do people wait? Is waiting normally a choice or a compulsory part of existence?

When we were little, we waited for time to pass so that we could be grown-ups. Now that we have grown up, we wait for the perfect job to land in our laps. When that job has landed, we wait for more procedures and promotions. We wait for people to notice our hard work and for praises and acknowledgement. We wait.

When we were studying, we were servants of time, following the class timetable to the dot. We waited for each period to go by so that we could rush out of the school compound when the bell rang. We waited for the school holidays to arrive and eagerly anticipated any school trips or weekend getaways with friends. We waited for the day we graduate so that we could dye our hair in some outrageous colour for friends to recognise us from miles away. We waited.

When you meet someone whom you could connect with, you put in the effort to make the best impression possible and wait. Wait for a response of some sort from that person. Wait for that person to reciprocate your feelings. Wait for text messages that contain sweet nothings. Wait for phone calls that make you sleep-deprived the next day. Wait for presents on special occasions. Look forward to dates so you could hold each other close and embrace. Wait for the right time to say the right words. We wait.

But what if we choose not to wait? What if we do not get people to notice our hard work? And even if we manage to get people to notice our hard work, do we wait for the acknowledgement, that fatter paycheck? What if we do not meet that someone? Even if we manage to meet that someone, do we wait if that person wants us to wait?

To me, waiting is a choice. We lament when we are made to wait and say, "No choice, I have to wait" but do we really need to? When I wait, I think it is due to my own ill-judgements in time management and life choices. So yes, it is a choice to wait and it is our own responsibility when we are made to wait.

Like I once told a close friend, "If you wait, you'd be waiting forever. So why wait?"

Time may heal but time waits for no one. So instead of stopping to watch the tide, why not go with the flow?

Starting the new year...

On a sunny, breezy Tuesday evening, a young lady received a call from her friend who had just got off work. They were ecstatic to finally spend some time together after nearly half a year of not meeting up. Her friend came up to her apartment for a short chat and to have some water. They then decided to head out for their dinner.

While waiting for the lift, the young lady noticed that the door to her apartment won't close and decided to check. Unknown to her, the lock was locked on the inside. When the door slammed shut, she tried to turn the knob and found that, she could not open the door. She tried all the keys that she had. None of them worked.

She made an emergency overseas call on her mobile to her friend, who is the actual tenant of the unit. She managed to get her agent's contact and tried to work things out directly with the agent. As the agent could only arrive 2 hours later, the young lady and her friend went for their dinner at an Indonesian restaurant and after that, an evening walk.

When the agent arrived with another key, the young lady thought that the sky had cleared. However, to everyone's dismay, that key did not turn the knob, either. Heartbroken, the young lady made her way down to the lobby where numbers to locksmiths were made available on the notice board.

First number... could not connect. Second number... could not connect either. Okay, so she tried the third number, which was a 1300 number. Nope, no connection. Thinking that her mobile had no reception, she checked her phone to find that she had full signal. Could it be out of credit? No, normally there would be a verbal message informing you of your low credit. Okay, call the phone company to check the account balance... could not connect... what?

The young lady had no choice but to use her friend's mobile. They managed to get a locksmith who could make it in 30 minutes. Okay, no worries. So they sat at the stairs facing the entrance, to wait.

While waiting, the young lady checked her mobile again. Why couldn't it make outgoing calls? What about incoming? Her friend tried by calling. Yup, phone rang so should be no problems with the network. Let's turn the phone off and back on again. Right, nothing. Before this it decided to not show anything on the memory card and now this!??!?! Try again, off and on again. Same thing. Maybe it's the SIM card, not the phone? They swapped SIM cards and found out that it was the SIM card that was faulty.

When she put her own SIM card back into her own phone again, she thought she should try texting to see if it worked. She sent one message to a friend and miraculously, he replied! Wow! Okay, let's try calling again... finally, it made the call!

It was such a relief when the locksmith arrived! His advice was:

1) Get a key for the lock.
2) Change the lock to a new and better one.

He made the young lady fill up a form to prove that he wasn't liaising with her to break into the unit. He was also nice enough to write her a tax invoice to see if she would be able to get the agent to reimburse her as it really wasn't her fault for not having the key to that lock.

So now, that young lady is AUD150 poorer and believes even more that this new year of the tiger is not going to be a good one for her.

And that young lady was me.

Sweet 16

1) After several years of non-exciting CNYs in Sydney, I finally got to soak in the red atmosphere of 2009! Oh, how I will miss the vibrant sights and sounds of ushering in the new year with family members, friends, lion dances, CNY songs and angpaus!

2) Shopping in Midvalley Megamall, The Gardens, Sunway Pyramid, 1 Utama, Berjaya Times Square, Pavilion and The Mines... and not to mention the creative decorations... why don't the shopping complexes here in Sydney do the same? Am glad that The Mines has changed managements as they have improved heaps! Parking is a breeze now with the sensors and with the opening of the new wing with big brand names, I am sure they will garner more patrons.

3) Managed to catch only 2 movies throughout m one year plus in KL - Sell-Out! and Tiger Woohoo!. Both local movies, I only have this to say: Malaysia Boleh!

4) I have not frequented Redbox Karaoke as much as I have this time around, thanks to my lovely staff member, Miss Teoh!

5) How many weddings? Hm, let's see. There was my cousin, Meng Cheng; my fellow choir member, Sei Mei and high school classmates Fei Mian as well as Dorothy.

6) Overseas trips on my own? Hell yeah! Went to Taiwan on an all-island tour with Reliance and made new friends. Mum sent me on a study trip to Shenzhen and Guangzhou and yup, I came back to Sydney for 6 weeks a few months back.

7) Found out new places to head out to for food: fullhouse, Ampang Lookout Point, Gasoline, Old Town White Coffee, Delectables, The Chocolate Lounge, Papparich, Sweet Bean, Station 1 Cafe, Island Red Cafe, Milwaukee Steak House, Cowboy, Pitstop, Sushi Zanmai and not forgetting the mamak in Bukit Serdang!

I also signed up for Herbalife's nutrition breakfast program and have been following Mum and Dad to their organic and vegetarian dinners.

8) Old friends: Pet, Max, Jon, Rick, Yin, Ai Ling, Dor, Weng, Tai Wai, Yuen Chai, Nelson, Raymond, Edwin, Tommy, Guek Ming, Fuh Ming, Siew June, Wai Meng, Eva, Robin, Yeow, Wai Hoong, Mei Ann, Husaini, Alexis, Joe, Pin Kean, Yun Hau, Peng Wai, Yee Teng, Lee Sih, Sim Yee, Yew Fon... it was so good seeing you guys again.

9) All staff members especially Miss Wong, Miss Lee, Miss Yam and Miss Teoh: It has been my greatest pleasure working and hanging out with you guys!

10) My babies at Honey Bee: Grow up into responsible, happy and caring little Honey Bees! You will make us proud! Sniff, sniff, I am so gonna miss you guys........

11) Ex-students, especially Li Xin, Munn Yee, Chui Mun, Chui Yee, Justin, Jie Hui and Chee Kin: How come I don't feel like I'm older than you guys and that I am your 'teacher'? Haha... you guys keep me young at heart and just let me say, it is such an honour to have students like you guys. Hugs! Do keep in touch ok?

12) I went to take studio photos!

13) Jennie from HK came visiting!

14) Met new people and made new friends. Of special mention would be Miss Teoh's high school friends Wai Leng, Pooi Yee and Yi Ling (whom I went cycling with after I don't know how many years of not touching a bicycle!) as well as the lads from E-Learn Dot Com, Chia, Ming Xy, Ah Boon and Scott...

15) Purchased new property that hopefully would be ready by the end of the year or hm, by CNY next year!

16) Of course, the best part of my 16 months in Malaysia would be the time spent with family. No matter if those times were good or bad, sweet or sour, nothing can replace that special feeling of just being home.
